Description
Sof is a France-born artist whose creative journey began with studies in art and design at the Upper Secondary School in Arts and Design, the High School of Plastic Arts, and the High School of Architecture in France. Early on, she developed a passion for pixels and a fascination with the ancient art of mosaics. This enthusiasm continues to shape her work and has been a defining thread in her artistic evolution for over two decades. After a successful career as an art director in France, Sof took the bold step of leaving her secure environment in Paris to fully dedicate herself to further developing her artistic concept in Berlin. Her art uniquely combines destruction and creation. She transforms materials imbued with history into new, interactive tesserae—the essential components of a mosaic. Light, magnetism, and matter form the central elements of Sof's work, creating a synergetic system that challenges traditional notions of permanence. In doing so, she fosters an open dialogue with the audience, inviting them to physically move and reconfigure the tesserae. This interactivity expands the creative process, making each work a continuously evolving artwork that is never definitively complete. Sof explores the three fundamental elements of mosaics—substrate, tesserae, and binder—and relates them to space, matter, and time. In her works, light takes on the role of the substrate, magnetism becomes the binder, and materials such as steel, concrete, clay, and chrome serve as tesserae. By deliberately integrating traces of destruction and transformation, her works gain unique depth and meaning. The audience is encouraged to reflect on the stories and history embedded in the materials used. A key series in her work is ARTHE, which celebrates the Earth as the origin of life. The fragility and resilience of ceramic elements reflect the planet’s endless diversity and strength. The SAWLL series, in contrast, incorporates materials from demolition sites in Berlin to highlight the transience of architecture and its connection to human history. With GEO, Sof delves into themes of reflection and vulnerability: chrome and aluminum symbolize the mutual influences between humanity and the environment. Sof’s works have been showcased at prestigious design events, including Dutch Design Week (October 2023) and Dubai Design Week (November 2023). She was also longlisted for the Aesthetica Art Prize 2024.
